The three stages of healthy detoxification
What is detoxification?
It's the process of removing toxic substances from the body.
Unfortunately in today's toxic world it is not uncommon to overwhelm the body's detox capacity – which means toxins don't get effectively removed.
This is bad because toxins that stay in the body, damage the body – and that contributes to poor health and chronic diseases.
The MUDDY POND analogy of healthy detoxification
How to clear a muddy pond...
Stage 1 – make sure the water coming into the pond is clean
•reduce your exposure to toxins – like food additives, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, cleaners, chemicals, etc.
Stage 2 – wash out the pond
•help your liver remove day-to-day toxins by making sure it has the nutrients it needs to do the job
Stage 3 – dredge the pond to remove the muddy residue at the bottom
•activate the liver to eliminate toxins that have built up over time with targeted detox-driving nutrients
IMPORTANT POINT:
Detoxification REQUIRES NUTRIENTS.
Not having enough of the right nutrients to support detoxification is one of the main reasons people have bad reactions to detoxes.
This is important to consider if you are thinking about any sort of fasting or restrictive diets.

...the long-term side effects resulting from inadequate nutrition may often be explained away as "a healing crisis" or "a bad detoxification process". True, detoxification reactions and other physiological changes associated with healing certainly do occur but they must be clearly differentiated from those adverse reactions arising from nutritionally inadequate diets.
